A Slack standup bot that DMs people, not the whole channel

Standup Smith lives in Slack on every plan. It asks in a DM, posts one thread, and on Business it keeps asking about a named blocker until someone marks it done.

Most Slack standup bots fail in one of two ways. They post a prompt in a busy channel, where it scrolls under deploys and memes. Or they DM everyone, dump 15 separate messages into the channel, and call that a digest.

Standup Smith DMs each member at their local time and posts one parent message in the standup channel. Individual answers are replies in that thread. The channel stays readable. People who care expand the thread. People who do not, skip it.

The Slack path, step by step

  1. Install Standup Smith from the link in your invite email. A Slack Marketplace listing needs Slack's review, so it comes after launch, not before.
  2. Run /standupsmith new in the channel that should hold the digest. Name it, pick three questions, pick a send hour.
  3. Add members from the Slack user picker. Free allows 5. Team allows 20. Business allows 75. Scale allows 200.
  4. At the send hour, each member gets a DM with the three questions as a Slack modal. They send the three answers. They can edit for 15 minutes.
  5. The channel gets one thread. On Team and up, the first reply is the AI digest.

There is no extra login. If you can open Slack, you can answer. Managers who want the weekly participation number get it by email, not as another Slack ping at the end of the week.

Slash commands you will actually use

/standupsmith new creates a standup. Max 1 on Free, 3 on Team, 10 on Business, 25 on Scale.

/standupsmith skip me 2026-11-03 2026-11-07 marks leave. The bot will not DM you on those dates. Business and Scale also load public holidays for US, UK, UAE, and KSA, so you do not have to enter National Day by hand.

/standupsmith blocker done on a follow-up DM closes the loop. Only the named owner or a manager can close it.

/standupsmith pause stops the whole standup for a freeze week. It is on Business and Scale. On Free and Team, delete the standup and create it again after the freeze.

What Slack gets that Teams does not, on cheaper plans

Slack is on every plan, including Free. Microsoft Teams starts on Business at 49 a month. If your engineering org lives in Slack, you do not pay extra to be there. If half the company moved to Teams, Business covers both from one workspace.

We do not post into Slack Connect channels. The digest channel must be inside your workspace. Shared channels with vendors are the wrong place for internal blockers.

Pricing that does not bill per Slack user in the workspace

A Slack workspace of 80 people with an 18-person engineering standup should not pay for 80. Geekbot already gets this right: it bills only the people in standups, at 3 per participant per month on monthly billing. Eighteen people is 54 a month. Standup Smith Team is 19 a month for up to 20 members, and the 62 people outside the standup cost nothing.

DailyBot Essentials is also 3 per active user per month, but its paid plans bill every member marked active in DailyBot, even if they never answer a check-in. Read DailyBot's pricing FAQ before you compare per-user Essentials pricing to our flat Team plan.

FAQ

Does the Slack bot work in huddles?

No. It does not run inside a huddle. Huddles are live calls, and Standup Smith is what you run so those calls become optional.

Can I answer from the Slack mobile app?

Yes. The DM and the modal work in Slack on iOS and Android. We do not ship a separate mobile app.

When does it launch?

No public date yet. Founding members get the invite first, by email, before anyone else.
